Where are you from ?
I’m from Mayobridge just outside of Newry.
How long have you been training ?
About 4-5 years, I think.
How did you get in to MMA ?
Was in a closing down sale for xtravision and UFC2010 was reduced to like £2 for the Xbox. I couldn’t believe a sport that mad existed. I streamed a few fights online then started looking for a place to train.
Tell us about your nickname how you got it ?
My nickname is Pythagoras because I’m fond of the occasional triangle choke. It used to be ‘the flea’ because one of my team mates was lamped on a trip to Brazil and thought he was funny, I’m glad that one’s gone.
What was the defining moment for you when you knew you wanted to become a fighter ?
Coming up to my first fight I was actually one piece of coursework away from going to university to study music technology but I didn’t bother handing it in because the submission date was the same day as my weigh in. Plus I knew the work was shit anyway because all my effort and time went into training for the fight, nothing else mattered but the fight.
Were your family and friends supportive when you decided to enter the world of MMA ?
In the nicest possible way. No. Not even a little. I was “too small” or it was “too violent” my mum would run me to training but I think she’d prefer I was into drugs or something.
What is your current record ?
What is your favorite strike or submission ?
Favourite strike is my left hook, favourite submission is the triangle or guillotine.
Who is your biggest inspiration ?
My team mates and coaches. I’ve seen my team mates struggle with issues in and out of the gym and always get in there and give it all. My coaches are saints, so patient, some of the best in the country.
What team do you train with ?
I train with Team Torres, best Jiu Jitsu in the country I also train with Newry Muay Thai and Tony Hughes works on my boxing.
Do you like to stand with your opponent or take the fight to the ground ?
I love submissions, I’ve recently really got into my striking but my ground game is what I’m known for I have 4 submissions and one tko but he was in a triangle when I tko’d him anyway.
What does being a fighter mean to you ?
Pushing myself in a way nobody is in day-to-day life.
What weight do you fight at?
125lbs I have a few fights at 135 just to get experience but I only walk about at 130.
what do you think separates you from other fighters In your division ?
I will literally rip your arms off.
If you could have one dream fight who would it be against ?
I know it’s a long time off but I’d like to fight Marcin Lasota eventually when I’m into my pro career, he disrespected my teammate. I didn’t like that. Also Abdul Chowdhury he got a dodgy decision against a team mate of mine, then said nobody at amature had his level of grappling, so he either doesn’t know me or is a liar.
Who has been your toughest fight to date ?
My last fight against Alex Budoui.
What is your mindset going in to a fight ?
I have no fixed mindset. Just how I’m feeling on the day tends to carry into the fight. Sometimes it’s good sometimes it’s not but I’m working on that side of my game more than anything.
Who are you fighting next ?
